From a small chain of stores to the UK's number one for home improvements
The company’s roots go back to 1982, when FW Woolworth was acquired. As part of the deal, a small chain of home improvement stores – B&Q – was included. This became the starting point for what was to become one of Europe’s biggest retail chains. By the turn of the millennium, Kingfisher began to focus exclusively on its home improvement businesses across Europe. Meanwhile, B&Q expanded its out-of-town presence to become the leading home improvement retailer in the UK.
Occupying the number one home improvement company spot in the UK, Poland and Turkey – and number two in all of its other key markets – Kingfisher takes its responsibilities as a multi-national business very seriously. From its first responsible timber sourcing policy published more than 25 years ago, to its net zero commitment to reducing carbon emissions, and championing of the circular economy to reduce waste and impact on the planet, Kingfisher is committed to industry-leading Responsible Business practices.
The organisation has identified four key priorities, which is believe can help bring about positive change to some of the biggest challenges facing society today. These are:
- Colleagues: We will be a more inclusive company.
- Planet: We will be forest-positive and help tackle climate change.
- Customers: We will help make greener, healthier homes affordable.
- Communities: We will fight to fix bad housing.
